Rejection at the Altar

StoryWave Original

Aria Thorne knew Alpha Lucian planned to humiliate her when he changed the mating ceremony from midnight to noon.

Moon bonds were sacred in darkness. Rejections happened in daylight, where every member of the Silverpine pack could witness the shame.

She still walked to the altar.

White flowers covered the stone platform. Her mother had sewn the ceremonial dress before she died, hiding tiny silver wolves inside the lace. Aria kept her chin raised while three hundred pack members watched her cross the courtyard alone. At the altar, Lucian stood beside Aria's younger cousin, Celeste, their hands already linked.

The priest looked anywhere but at Aria. “Alpha, your promised mate has arrived.”

Lucian did not offer his hand.

“Aria Thorne,” he said, making his voice carry across the courtyard, “you were chosen for me by a dying Luna who mistook pity for prophecy. You have no wolf, no rank, and no strength worthy of this pack.”

Laughter stirred near the council seats.

Aria felt each word, but she refused to let him smell pain. “If I am so unworthy, why did you wait ten years to say it?”

His jaw tightened. Celeste's smile widened.

Lucian had once kissed Aria beneath the winter bridge and promised he would wait forever for her wolf to wake. That was before his father died, before power became more valuable than every private promise.

“Because the northern alliance requires a true Luna,” he said. “Celeste carries Alpha blood.”

Celeste stepped forward wearing Aria's mother's moonstone necklace.

That hurt more than the rejection.

“Where did you get that?”

“Your father gave it to me,” Celeste said. “He understands what the pack needs.”

Aria searched the crowd. Her father stood beside the council with his eyes lowered.

Lucian took a silver blade from the priest. “I, Lucian Black, Alpha of Silverpine, reject Aria Thorne as my mate and future Luna.”

The bond they had nurtured since adolescence tore through Aria's chest. She dropped to one knee. The courtyard blurred, and somewhere inside her a locked door began to shake.

Lucian waited for her to accept the rejection. Without her words, the bond would remain painful for them both.

Aria pushed herself upright.

“No.”

Silence struck the courtyard.

“You must accept,” the priest whispered.

“I must do nothing.” Blood touched Aria's lip, but her voice did not tremble. “If he wants freedom, let him carry the cost of breaking his oath.”

Celeste hissed. Lucian stepped down from the altar and caught Aria's arm hard enough to bruise.

“Do not turn this into theater.”

“You invited the audience.”

A growl rolled over the courtyard.

It did not come from Lucian.

Every wolf turned toward the open gates. Black-armored riders waited beyond them, silent beneath banners marked with a silver crown. At their center sat a man on a midnight horse, his long dark coat fastened at the throat with the royal Lycan crest.

King Cassiel Vane had not entered pack territory in twelve years. Stories said he possessed no mate bond because the Moon Goddess feared what an equal might make him.

He dismounted and walked toward the altar.

Lucian released Aria. Even he bowed.

“Your Majesty,” the priest stammered. “We were not informed—”

“I did not come to be announced.”

Cassiel's gaze found Aria. The locked door inside her shattered.

Power surged through her bones. Her torn bond with Lucian burned away in a wave of silver fire. Wolves cried out and dropped to their knees. Above the altar, daylight darkened as the moon moved across the sun.

Aria's first shift began.

It did not feel like becoming a wolf. It felt like remembering one.

Silver markings spread from her wrists. The moonstone necklace at Celeste's throat snapped free and flew into Aria's hand. Cassiel stopped before her, his eyes no longer cold.

“There you are,” he said.

Aria's father finally looked up. Terror hollowed his face.

Celeste clutched Lucian. “What is she?”

Cassiel removed his crown and placed it at Aria's feet.

“The last daughter of the royal Luna line,” he said. “And the only wolf in this courtyard with the right to command me.”

Lucian stared at the woman he had rejected, then at the Lycan King kneeling before her.

From beneath the altar came the scrape of chains.

A hidden door opened, and a prisoner's hand reached into the light. The woman below wore Aria's face, aged by twenty missing years.

“Mother?” Aria whispered.

Her father's soldiers drew their swords.
