The contract offered Elara Wynn enough money to save her sister's life and exactly nine months to regret accepting it.
She sat alone in the silver waiting room of Mooncrest Fertility Institute, reading the first page for the fourth time while rain struck the mountain windows. The clinic had no sign on the road, no public telephone number, and security guards whose eyes flashed wolf-gold whenever the elevator opened. Only pack royalty came here. Omegas like Elara entered through the service gate.
SURROGATE AGREEMENT: HOUSE DRAVEN.
The intended father was listed only as Alpha K. The intended mother line had been left blank.
Clause seven required Elara to live at the father's estate until delivery. Clause eleven forbade her from revealing the pregnancy to any pack. Clause seventeen said that if a mating bond appeared between surrogate and intended father, the father would reject the bond immediately and publicly.
Elara pressed her thumb over those words. Three weeks earlier, her fiancé Nolan had rejected her in front of the Ashwood pack after learning she carried no wolf scent. He had called her defective while the Luna candidates laughed behind their jeweled masks. Elara had survived that humiliation. She could survive a stranger's rejection too.
Her phone lit with another message from St. Anne's Hospital.
PAYMENT REQUIRED BY 8:00 A.M. OR LILY'S SURGERY WILL BE RELEASED.
Elara picked up the pen.
The consultation-room doors opened before she could sign.
The man who entered wore a black coat beaded with rain and the expression of someone accustomed to entire rooms becoming silent for him. He was tall, dark-haired, and scarred across one knuckle. Two guards remained outside. The clinic director bowed so deeply that the silver chain around his neck touched the floor.
“Your Majesty.”
Elara's pen stopped.
Kael Draven was not merely an Alpha. He was the High Alpha who controlled the northern packs, the wolf newspapers called the Winter King. His mate had died two years ago without giving him an heir. Rumor claimed the loss had frozen whatever mercy he once possessed.
Kael looked at Elara. The air changed.
Heat swept beneath her skin, sharp enough to steal her breath. A second heartbeat seemed to strike inside her chest. Kael gripped the back of a chair until the wood cracked beneath his fingers.
The director stepped between them and sprayed wolfsbane mist into the room. The sensation vanished.
“A stress response,” he said too quickly. “Miss Wynn has no awakened wolf. A bond is biologically impossible.”
Kael's gaze did not leave her. “Why was clause seventeen added?”
The director swallowed. “Standard protection for House Draven.”
Elara saw the lie pass between them.
Kael took the contract from her and turned to the final page. His signature was already there in black ink. Beneath it, the payment amount had been doubled.
“You may still walk away,” he said.
“Can my sister's surgery wait?”
His eyes flicked to the hospital message on her screen. “No.”
The answer was brutal, but honest. Elara signed.
The clinic moved immediately. A nurse took six vials of blood, fitted Elara with a silver monitoring bracelet, and led her toward the procedure wing. Kael followed despite the director's protest.
“Intended fathers normally wait upstairs,” the director said.
“I am not a normal father.”
Elara should have been frightened by him. Instead, his presence quieted something raw inside her. That frightened her more.
In the preparation room, the nurse scanned Elara's abdomen before beginning the implantation. The monitor filled with gray shadows. Then the nurse froze.
“Run it again,” the director ordered.
The second scan showed the same impossible light: a tiny silver pulse surrounded by a ring shaped like a crescent moon.
Elara stared at the screen. “What is that?”
No one answered.
Kael crossed the room and seized the director by his collar. “The transfer has not happened.”
“It cannot be a child,” the director whispered. “Not yet.”
The pulse sounded through the speakers—fast, strong, unmistakably alive.
Kael released him and turned toward Elara. His controlled expression had finally broken. Beneath the sharp scent of wolfsbane, she could smell winter cedar and the same impossible recognition that had struck her when he entered.
The director backed toward the alarm. “Your Majesty, the moon prophecy said the lost Luna would carry your heir before she ever shared your bed.”
Elara's monitoring bracelet flashed red. A line of hidden text appeared beneath her signature on the digital contract.
MATERNAL IDENTITY CONFIRMED: ELARA DRAVEN.
She had never met Kael before tonight.
But according to the contract, she was already carrying his child.
